On successful completion of the recruitment process candidates will be offered a contract for employment and enrolled onto our 'Trainee Firefighter Development Programme'. This programme is designed to develop, coach and mentor trainees, from initial recruitment through to competency. To achieve this, the programme is designed around 3 main development principles:
A trainee attends Head Quarters 6 weeks prior to their start date and receives induction input from departments to ensure they have a greater understanding of their new role, legal requirements and uniform issue. They are asked to complete pre-learning online packages that will have a positive effect on their development once they start their employment with West Midlands Fire Service.
A trainee following completion of their pre-learning, will attend training school which is delivered over multiple sites throughout the West Midlands to complete their 8-week programme covering all the key functions of a modern-day firefighter. During the delivery programme, the trainees are also required to complete various operational led online packages to further their knowledge in each practical subject.
The 'Trainee Firefighter Development Programme' covers all firefighter core competencies, but whilst recognising the need to develop the trainees in our Prevention and Protection Strategies. The trainees will receive training from subject matter advisors from within our Prevention and Protection team to ensure they can assertively deliver Prevention and Protection activities for their individual commands once deployed on station. These activities may include supporting the wider health agenda working with multiple partners and agencies.
Below are the key development areas covered within the 'Trainee Firefighter Development Programme'
A trainee, following deployment onto station, will be required to work towards a development plan to achieve competence and receive full firefighters pay. To achieve this competence, they will be required to demonstrate their understanding and application in all core functions. This demonstration of competence will be assessed by station commanders, line managers, Subject Matter Advisors and/ or Station Based Trainers with continual support from the 'Trainee Firefighter Development Programme' delivery team.
