West Midlands

Become a West Midlands Fire Service Firefighter

What's it all about?

The role of a firefighter is ever-changing. Although responding to emergencies is what we're traditionally known for, the reality is that the majority of our time is spent carrying out other tasks that focus on prevention, education, training and development; all of which means working within the heart of our community.

If you are a caring, empathetic, dedicated individual with a high level of emotional intelligence and resilience, which includes occasionally working in some challenging environments, and are committed to serving the communities of the West Midlands, then this could be the perfect job for you!

Once you have completed the selection process, you will embark on an initial training programme where you will be employed as a trainee firefighter. When you are posted to a fire station following your initial training your salary will be £29,000. When you are a competent firefighter your salary will rise to £37,675 (this may take up to 3 years).

Why we need you

Prevention

Our firefighters have a key role in educating our communities, to try to make everyone safer, stronger, and healthier. They spend a considerable amount of their day carrying our Safe and Well visits to vulnerable people's homes and delivering safety messages.

Protection

Our protection work is all about protecting life and property, making businesses and the economy stronger, and communities safer. Our firefighters inspect high-risk and tall buildings, including residential flats, hospitals, schools and vulnerable businesses, to keep safe and reassure the people who live and work there.

Response

Our professional, full-time firefighters respond assertively, effectively, and safely to a wide variety of incidents, 24/7. Based on evidence and our knowledge of risk, we know that our five-minute attendance standard for serious incidents in high-risk areas saves lives, homes, and businesses. We have an excellent track record of increasing public safety and working with other agencies and organisations - all for the benefit of our communities.
